On july 29 - 28 I went on a two day camping trip up north. Here are some pictures of the trip.

Image
Yeah it was hard to get there. We had to paddle through swamps, grass and lots of fish.

Image
This is our campground, completely free. You can see I already found my place by a pine tree.

Image
A view from our campground out to a lake. Water Is just slightly cooler then air.

Image
Lots of butterflies out there, size of a small bird.

Image
Cranberry anyone? This is wild cranberry, not yet ripe however.

Image
While there I went mushroom hunting, I found some great mushrooms, some of which I have never seen before. Like this marvelous Chanterelle. It tastes great! Be careful when collecting this mushroom, there is another mushroom known as False Chanterelle which causes hallucination in some people.

Image
This is another mushroom which is now one of my favorite. It is known as Chicken of the woods. It tastes great. I roasted it wit pasta and spices.

I am glad you liked it. :D
Sadly I can not photograph taste of wild cranberries, :( they are much tastier then those out of regular market. And full of juice, unlike those in store, which are mostly empty inside of them.
As hard as I tried cranberry picture did not turn out as good as mushrooms have. By the way this weekend I am again going on a trip, and will update this page at the end of each weekend with a new story.

Petr

I must compliment you on setting this all up and your photos are excellent.

I felt I was right there with you and enjoying myself, that is up untill the rattlesnake part, then I found myself back at home in a fraction of a second.

Keep up the fine effort and in a few months this should be a very active place!

Last weekend August 12 till 13, 2006 I went on another trip exploring new lake. Over all this trip was not so long, compared to my last three day long trip. Sadly there were no mushrooms and not many berries. Although swimming was great.

Image
It was quite a distance to get there, but we had sail put up on our boat so we did not have to paddle at all. Wind was to our side and a little against us, luckily our sail, rubber boat able to go ninety degrees from wind and just a little about ten degrees against the wind.

Image
When we got there this is what we had seen from our camp site. Closest peace of land is in fact a small island and we used to swim to it, and then back to our camp.

Image
And this is me, all dirty from coal and wood while I was attempting to build a campfire, so we could finally make something to eat.

Night had settled rather quickly and sky was light up by countless stars and distant galaxies. We sat by a campfire and stared at the vast reaches of space when suddenly a meteorite zipped across a sky, then in about a minute another one, soon followed other rocks from space. Some of them burned with redish color probably iron chunks. However other meteorites were very interesting, beautiful. When they flew across a sky they would live this sparkling bright white, bluish line after themselves. I figure it were magnesium chunks, because only Magnesium and Zinc can burn this bright. Those meteorites seemed to come in packs, when ten of them flew past not a single one would come afterwards. Then we stared at satellites orbiting a sky sky, and moon started to come out from other end of the forest. Satellite was flying across light of the moon and what happened was quite amazing. It started to light up from very darkd to so bright that it was brighter then any star on a sky, and even the moon itself. Then it slowly became dark once again. I figured it must have been that solar panels on a satellite had reflected light from moon and from sun directly on to our campground, so we had seen it lighting up. It was very interesting and rare event. Then we listened to horror stories from our friends and I went to sleep having whole bunch of nightmares.

The next day our trip was over, and we went back home. You can see on this photo our sail, with

This was the longest and hardest trip that I had since a long while. It had consisted of following. We walked hundred kilometer loop with backpacks, caring all necessities and food with us. The whole trip took us eight days. Here are some photos.

Image
It takes six hours to drive from Toronto to Killarney park. We came there at about eleven thirty. Packed up our backpacks, ate some food and headed over to our first campsite. Somewhere I think of about 15 kilometers from our cars. On our way we stopped by a beautiful blue lake, and then over to our camp. When we got there we froze in awe amazement. Water in a lake had deep blue color which I have never seen in Canada. You can see me swimming in there with my dad.

Image
During evening I went to collect mushrooms and we made wonderful mushroom soup. Then all of a sudden rain started pouring very hard, winds blew very fast and it got cold. We had jumped in tents and waited out the bad weather. During late evening rain turned to drizzle and we still had not hanged our food on a tree to prevent bears from eating it. That is when we had whole bunch fun. We tried many strategies. First we pulled and pulled and there was simply to much weight and friction against a tree, bags simply would not go up. When we understood that pulling is dead end we tried another approach. Basically we all had to lift a bag and another person had to pull on a rope.

Hurray, it

Hi Petr:

I haven't been on this page of the forum until right now. I loved all of your camping stories and the pictures that went with them. The one putting the food up in the tree to keep it away from the bear was hysterical!!!! Some of the pictures didn't unfold, just the box with the little red x so those pictures I couldn't see, but I was laughing just the same from your descriptions of the 6 of you trying to get the food up there. :D

The picture of the "horn of plenty" mushrooms drying in the tree......what do these mushrooms look like?........and how did you dry them? You said use string and a tree. What kind of string? And how did you string the mushrooms on the string.....did you use a needle or what??

I will be moving to the Mt. Shasta Eco Settlement in California and I'm betting there will be some mushrooms to gather there so any information you can give me would be appreciated. Thank you,

Arianna-Sage

Greetings Arianna-Sage.

I am delighted to find that you liked my posts. I will try to find some time to post something new, since last post was quite a long time ago. Food hiding from a bear fiasco in Killarny park really was hysterical, you should have witnessed it first hand, that

Dear Petr:

Thank you sooo much for all the information and the links!! When I get to Mt. Shasta I will be finding a book about mushrooms that grow in Northern California and yes, I will learn about the poisonious ones first.

I am amazed that a regular sewing needle and thread would hold a string of mushrooms. I was thinking I would have to use a needle with a larger threading hole, maybe like a darning needle that people use to sew a heavier fabric, and that would need then a thicker thread like maybe a corded type of thread, so thanks for that information. I will be trying all of it when I get to Mt. Shasta.

I look forward to reading about more of your adventures.

Arianna-Sage
